EnGen Institute 1992-2022
I N S T I T U T E
HISTORY The development of EnGen Institute and its mission and objectives as now constituted has developed over five decades and through five phases - 1970s Background Research Closed Cycle Life Support Systems (as in submarines) Formal Technology Transfer Mechanisms (CAD & Knowledgebases) Generative Systems for software & electronics (Design Environments) 1980s ENGEN Research Project Inspired by NASA’s 1980 systems engineering study in which ‘Self-Replicating Systems’ are used to design a Space Seed’ from which a lunar base develops, a research program integrating the three research themes of the 1970’s began. 1990s EnGen Institute - Constructors in Man/Machine/Environment Systems The ENGEN Research project solved core problems identified by NASA’s 1980 study which NASA recognised as a ‘Scientific Breakthrough’ leading to the formation of EnGen Institute and a decade of detailed foundational research. 2000s Implementation - Energy Systems EnGen Institute’s response to challenges to Earth-based life-support systems due to climate change focusing on energy & power > water > food systems. 2010s Implementation - Disaster Resilience EarthBase: Disaster Resilience - environmentally & economically sustainable survival systems, life-support systems & closed-cycle cellular production.
